Soils and Substrates
The right soil or substrate is one of the most critical factors in growing thriving houseplants. While many plants are sold in generic potting mixes, long-term success depends on using a medium that matches a plant's natural growth habits - whether that means moisture-retentive blends for tropical foliage or fast-draining mixes for succulents and cacti.
A well-structured substrate does more than hold a plant upright. It regulates moisture, allows oxygen to reach roots, supports beneficial microbial activity, and prevents compaction over time. Ingredients like bark, perlite, pumice, coco coir, and peat each serve different purposes in creating the right balance of drainage and moisture retention.
No single mix works for every plant. Understanding how soil structure influences watering frequency and root health is key to preventing common problems like root rot, stalled growth, or chronic dryness.
